For 25 years, Joe Navarro worked as an FBI special agent in the area of counterintelligence and behavioral assessment. A founding member of the National Security Division’s Behavioral Analysis Program, he is on the adjunct faculty at Saint Leo University, the Institute for Intergovernmental Research and remains a consultant to the intelligence community.

Joe has appeared on Fox News, ABC News, the Today Show, CNN, Hardball with Chris Mathews, and NPR Radio, as well as other media outlets, on topics as varied as interviewing, terrorism, and body language.

As one of the leading experts in the world on nonverbal communication, Joe hasshared his unique knowledge of human behavior with the intelligence community as well as the medical professions, banking institutions and the insurance industry worldwide. A much sought after lecturer, Mr. Navarro brings together his academic background, scientific research, and practical experience catching spies to the art of observing and interpreting human behavior.

For 25 years I worked in the FBI catching spies.

If you were to ask me what that work consisted of, I would have to be honest and say mostly observation and the use of psychology. In essence, I was a paid observer of human behavior. My greatest tool was the knowledge that had been acquired in the last half century on how the brain

For the past 10 years, Joe has been collecting toiletries for the homeless and mentally afflicted. Most of the homeless who are mentally ill get food and clothing but rarely does anyone think about contributing toiletries so they can wash, shampoo, comb, or deodorize. So with his friend, Elizabeth Barron, he started a program ten years ago where they collect these items and provide them for the homeless. It's an informal charitable activity but they are now providing enough toiletries for about thirty people a month.
In addition to his counterintelligence duties with the Bureau, Mr. Navarro was the senior criminal profiler in the Tampa Division and continues to serve as a consultant in the National Security Division's Behavioral Analysis Program.

In my latest book, What Every Body Is Saying, I write about the very broad aspects of psychology—how the brain works and reacts to the world around us and how this knowledge can be used to interpret the thoughts, feelings, and intentions of others. The book is based on my years of experience in the FBI speed-reading people, often based on only a few seconds of observation. My success was achieved by knowing how the brain works.

An Ex-FBI Agent 'Thin-Slices' Behavior To Read Emotions That Are Not Put Into Words

Picture this: I was sailing the Caribbean for three days with a group of friends and their spouses, and everything seemed perfect. The weather was beautiful, the ocean diaphanous blue, the food exquisite; our evenings together were full of laughter and good conversation. Things were going so well that one friend said to the group, "Let's do this again next year." I happened to be across from him and his wife as he spoke those words. In the cacophony of resounding replies of "Yes!" and "Absolutely!" I noticed that my friend's wife made a fist under her chin as she grasped her necklace. This behavior stood out to me as powerfully as if someone had shouted, "Danger!"

When I am asked what is the most reliable means of determining the health of a relationship, I always say that words don't matter. It's all in the language of the body. The nonverbal behaviors we all transmit tell others, in real time, what we think, what we feel, what we yearn for or what we intend. Now I am embarking on another cruise, wondering what insights I will have about my travel companions and their relationships. No matter what, this promises to be a fascinating trip, a journey for the mind and the soul. I am with a handful of dear friends and 3,800 strangers, all headed for Alaska; for an observer it does not get any better than this. While lining up to board on our first day, I notice just ahead of me a couple who appear to be in their early 30s. They are obviously Americans (voice, weight and demeanor).

Not so obvious is their dysfunctional relationship. He is standing stoically, shoulders wide, looking straight ahead. She keeps whispering loudly to him, but she is not facing forward. She violates his space as she leans into him. Her face is tense and her lips are narrow slivers each time she engages him with what clearly appears to be a diatribe. He occasionally nods his head but avoids contact with her. He won't let his hips near her as they start to walk side by side. He reminds me of Bill and Hillary Clinton walking toward the Marine One helicopter immediately after the Monica Lewinsky affair: looking straight ahead, as much distance between them as possible.
